There are times in life when misfortune could happen. It’s usually out of your control and there’s very little you can do to prevent it. However, with the right planning and preparation, you could potentially avoid most of the ill effects that come with bad luck. In life, it’s important to understand that a lot of things are simply out of your control, so whether it’s a car accident in the future or breaking up with your partner, here are a couple of ways to prepare yourself for misfortune.

The first major hurdle you need to overcome is saving money. For starters, ensure that you’ve started up an emergency fund to pay for any unexpected expenses. This could be anything from car repairs to home fixes and even travel fees to get places. This emergency fund shouldn’t be touched at all until you absolutely need it. So don’t use it for things like groceries unless you don’t have money in your regular bank account or wallet, and don’t take money out of your savings for luxury purposes like a holiday. A great way to start saving is to simply put a small percentage of your income into your savings account every time you’re paid. But don’t keep saving for no reason; once you’ve reached a certain amount, such as a thousand, stop saving that money and put it towards something else.

Insurance is the most basic protection we have from misfortune. If our house crumbles, home insurance will help us receive compensation. If we’re ill, then we need health insurance to keep us healthy. If we crash a car, then we need car insurance to help us make a claim. Insurance policies vary from company to company so it’s important that you check all the terms and conditions. If you don’t have insurance for basic things such as your home, then it’s essential you start making payments and consider what plans you have available.

Cut Bad Habits

Many unfortunate events, such as developing a serious illness, health issues or crashing a car, can be mitigated by cutting down on bad habits. One fantastic example is when you’re smoking. If you want to reduce the risk of cancer in the future and also provide your children with the best health possible, then you should stop smoking immediately and focus on recovering your better habits. If you’re a reckless driver and you’ve been in several near-collision incidents, then consider taking a defensive driving lesson or simply driving slower. You might get from point A to B slower, but at least you don’t risk crashing.

Accepting Change

Some things are simply out of your control. Your parents will age, you’ll grow older, and your children will move out. Misfortune sometimes comes along with these events, such as family or friends passing away due to their age. However, it’s important that you don’t plan excessively to prevent things you can’t change. For instance, if your children are growing up and you refuse to let them out alone because you’re afraid they’ll get lost or talk to strangers, then they’ll never learn how to become adults that are self-sufficient and capable of travelling without your help.
